7 Core Elements of Democracy

Element Description:

Even though the majority holds power in a democracy, the perspectives of the minority are also considered, included, and respected. Democratic decision-making often involves discussion, compromise, and negotiation to find solutions that different groups can accept. This helps ensure that people who disagree with the majority still have a voice in government and that their rights and perspectives are protected.

This voice is important – without it, the government would lack legitimacy. In order for people to view the government as legitimate, they need to believe that their voices are being heard and considered, even when the government makes decisions they disagree with.
