ABOUT Demcap
Classroom

DemCap Classroom is an online hub for teachers and students, providing free lesson plans, activities, and primary sources on all things Democracy and Capitalism.

The idea to provide classroom resources on Democracy and Capitalism arose when the Democracy and Capitalism Lab (then known as the Project on Democracy and Capitalism) was founded at the University of Virginia in 2021. The Lab explores the interdependency between these two institutions, offers solutions to their problems, and highlights their successes. Soon after its founding, faculty began receiving emails from teachers across the United States asking for help teaching these important concepts. How can teachers include Democracy and Capitalism in their classrooms, and how can these ideas help better prepare students for the world?

These questions led to the creation of the Democracy and Capitalism Teachers Institute (DCTI), a week-long, all-inclusive professional development program for high school teachers across the country. DCTI was – and continues to be – a huge success, giving educators the opportunity to explore these ideas alongside leading scholars and fellow teachers.

Still, there was still a call for accessible resources – a place where teachers and students could learn about Democracy, Capitalism, and the intersection of the two, even if they couldn’t attend DCTI. That’s where DemCap Classroom comes in.

DemCap Classroom is a resource hub where teachers and students can learn more about Democracy and Capitalism, and how these ideas shape history, economics, geography, and the world we live in today. All DemCap Classroom resources come from current classroom teachers, known as DemCap Teacher Fellows, and are vetted and tested in classrooms across the United States.

DemCap Classroom is and will always be free and accessible to everyone. Our goal is to provide high-quality resources that help educators teach these important ideas and inspire students to learn more about Democracy and Capitalism. We encourage you to explore our events, browse our resources, and sign up for our newsletter to stay up to date on new lessons, resources, and opportunities.
