7 Core Elements of Democracy

Element Description:

Democracy gives citizens the ability to choose their representatives through regular, competitive elections. Elections allow people to decide who will represent their interests in government and give citizens an opportunity to replace leaders they do not support. For elections to be democratic, people must have meaningful choices and be able to participate freely, without unfair restrictions.

Elections are held regularly, and all citizens are given the opportunity to participate, regardless of socioeconomic status, political beliefs, or background. This allows citizens to have a voice and hold their government accountable.
